about

In the early part of 1997, Mark was bringing lots of tracks forward for the band to include into their set, and as they began to prepare for their Avalanche Audio sessions, this track called 'Lifer' was quickly added to the list. The song was never fully completed during that session, but the song was resurrected by the band Shift in early 2001 which eventually became a part of their live set. When the group chose to record their live set for the 2002 album "A Shift of a Demo", this was an easy include.

I believe the song is written about a friend who died far too early.

lyrics

I don’t seem to realise why
Living my life like you won’t die
Tomorrow comes too easily
And I don’t wanna feel like
I could lose you

Scared to be around
What threatens to leave at any second
Blink – don’t close your eyes
Don’t let Him touch you!
Don’t let Him hold!
You’ll take with you a failed part of me

All the time to promise to try
Living myself – a selfish lie
Maybe I’ll come another day
And I don’t wanna feel like
I don’t know you

Life was always easy with you ushered at my side
But now it seems uncertain, I’ve got nothing else to hide
Forced to make decisions, I can’t make them on my own
The dying light engulfs you as your spirit returns home

Try to make up for lost time
Now it’s too late, sever the line
How quickly you were snatched away
And I don’t wanna feel like
My whole life is passing by
Just enough time to say
I will miss you
