about

Not long after Julio joined Cynosure in mid-1996, Mark started bringing us pieces for the band to play. This, along with Seven Hills, was the first songs Mark showed the band. It was also the RockLords' first true experience with non-standard beats, this song being in a 5. It took a while to pick up, but very quickly became a Cynosure, and later Shift, standard.

This song was, in fact, recorded in June of 1997, before the rest of The Grey Area album and even before the 5-piece had won the Taranaki Battle of the Bands in that July. This 2015 redo is merely remastered in places.

The song was written by Mark about a fleeting exchange of looks with another person and how much could be communicated in such a short moment.

lyrics

I love my pain, it teaches me life
Try to refrain from pleasure
I seek my pain to balance my life
Teaching me to be mortal

And in your eyes I see a pain
Not unlike me

We share a bond, you and I
Forged in this place of hurting
A glance afar establishes
A common ground reclining

And in your eyes I see a pain
Not unlike me
I know your pain

Bite my top lip
Taste my own blood
Feel mortality

As I move on, I try and leave
All this pain behind me
But, it's too late - it has become
Everything that I be
