The Power of the Right Question

from Y3K Part Two by Kerry Logan

/

about

The Y3K album is a conceptual piece about my 'spiritual reset' and Part Two occurred when I read the book 'Love Wins' by Rob Bell. While the title is based on a concept I first heard from Carly Fiorina, the lyrics are effectively ripped right out of the first few chapters of Love Wins, where Bell goes on a question spree. So taken aback by the honesty and obvious nature of the questions, it was perhaps the catalyst for the whole reset in my thinking.

This was a difficult song to make work as beyond the two riffs within the song, it really isn't too much more. The sparseness in the song leaves my vocal a little unprotected by teeth and I felt very nervous about making the almost rappy piece work. I think it worked out okay. It's also the first acoustic guitar I use on any of the Y3K songs.

lyrics

What do you think?
How do you read it? How do you know it?
Is it luck? Being born in the right place?
Having a pastor that’s better at this?

[Salvation?]
Which Christ is this?
The missionary gets a flat tire?
Is it what you say? Who you are? What you do?
Who’s your wife? What you ask? What they ask you?
And who gets to decide?

[Heaven?]
Where is there?
What will it be like? Will there be dogs there?
Does anybody look good in a white robe?
Is our eschatology it?

[Hell?]
Do I believe in a literal Hell?
Or a man in tights playing Pink Floyd backwards?
Do we really need a serious word – one loaded with violence and hate
And all the horror we abide?

[God?]
How big is God?
Is He ‘sort of’ great? Does God get what God wants?
Is history tragic? Are we safe?
Are we all on our own?

[Me?]
And what of me?
Am I asking enough questions?
If I test what I know, what I love,
What I think, what I feel,
What I know is real –
Surely the truth in all survives!
