about

The opening bars of the song is roughly all I had for this track prior to fleshing it out for WWB. In the early 2000s I discovered the first several albums of Genesis and loved their slant on Progressive Rock which was often very piano heavy. This song began as a early-Genesis-inspired piano riff.

When it came time for the album I began writing it into a full song which mostly came easily enough. When I got to the middle, I needed somewhere to go which is where the 7-beat came from. I wrote the middle piece and it was heavily influenced by a 7-beat riff that Mark Weir had shown our band Shift around 2002. (Thanks Mark!) I then used a piece I had originally written as part of an Egyptian concept album I was writing to form the end of the Sadness. So proud was I of this song's finish, I released it as a single.

lyrics

Opening my eyes again
This morning I wake with dreams in my head
I’m hollowed out by the Sadness
My head is all messed up just thinking about it all

Trying to pull myself back up
The hope is crumbling – I can’t open up
Can’t run from the blue face in the mirror
“You have to try – you have to care – for me”

Soaring with my head in the clouds
But that sinking feeling is pulling me down…

We can’t use that moment’s death
As an excuse for letting it rest
A sea of tears, they well in my eyes
A mountain of sorrow – how I would take flight!

O’er the hills and far away
My imagination heads off each day
I’d turn another page in my life…
The moment says, “We must talk – it’s time”

Trudging through the mire
Just to be pulled into line
As different as horses to unicorns
I can feel his disappointment
“My faith in me is fading away!”

I was the boy – but now nothing
I moved a mountain in front of ‘we’
Although I tried to run away
I feel I’m falling back each day
Return the boy
