about

One of the few songs I authored in my final official year of songwriting in 2009, this existed as a short, repeated riff and an structural idea for some time. I could hear the song in my head but found it difficult to process that into written down form. I later added words, abstractions of some of my favourite bible verses/ideas, and left the song sitting.

When the Teeth album began to be formed, this was a late inclusion. This demanded that I finish the song and I set about recording it. This was the first song I ever tried to record without Bob, as he was largely unavailable for parts of the year. Jeremiah Saolotoga, a year 10 boy at Naenae College, possesses such a beautiful raw rhythm and, after hearing him drumming on a desk with his hands during class, I knew he had to be on the album.

lyrics

Blessed are the spiritually poor
For is theirs the Kingdom of Heaven
Words to live by, words to know and love
For I live it every day

Very rarely will one die for one
Though for a good man one might dare to die
And He showed us greater love than this
While I still sucked, He gave it away!

He made Him who had never lost
Take on loss for you and me
So in Him we might be all good
Ain't that they best news that you have ever heard?!
