How Long?

from Decimation by Kerry Logan

about

The South Taita Reserve Grade Presidents XI was a band formed for three months (or so) in order to live-record an album, comprising of songs that I had written. I managed to grab a group of amazing friends - Aaron singing, Dave drumming, Neil on bass, and the awesome Pete to share guitar duties with. This then was the first song the band learnt together and the first one to be recorded during the final two weeks of sessions. The track was one of two laid down without a guitar solo, to then have Pete overdub the solo after the recording. This pop-punk number quickly became a favourite amongst the group.

The song was initially written in 2006 and is all about forcing yourself into relationships and how that might not be always the best way.

[I've since done some study and found out that this track is similar to 2001's The Middle by Jimmy Eats World, so I must have soaked it in without realising it. While the chords and the choruses are different enough, the phrasing and the structure is pretty close. Dang!]

lyrics

“How long have you been in love?”
I have to ask myself in this lull
I wonder – when will it be enough?
When will you entertain the thought of never needing anyone?

You – look what you’ve gone and done
Tramping from pillar to post so that you’re not alone
Not healthy – no, it’s not even close
Heart broke too many times without (any) rest just will not work

I tried to ascertain
What it’s about – I scream and shout!
If I learn anything, it’s that I’ll never learn…

And now, now that you’re out of love
What form of discipline will you employ?
I wonder, have you considered above?
You need to stop and think and let your Dad take care of it all

The tale doesn’t stop right there
As it turns out, it all works out!
I wear ‘the One ring to rule them all’!
