In the Beginning God

from Y3K: The Beginning by Kerry Logan

about

The "Y3K: The Beginning" album is a conceptual piece about my 'spiritual reset', a prequel of parts one (2014) and two (2016) that tells of the beginning of my faith journey. This track starts the whole journey, titled after the first four words found in the book of Genesis. The song itself centres on my growing faith starting with my first memories at around three-and-a-half, then my Catholic school upbringing, and the sense that I had when I was young that, although I could not say what it was, I knew that God had something big planned for my life. I remember finding church as a child both boring and restricting, but when I closed my eyes in prayer, something came alive. That is what the core of this song is about.

Musically I threw absolutely everything at this track, wanting to make it as magnificent and grandiose as I could. The starting riff, in 17/8 no less, was designed to be jarring and unsettling, much like how my early faith seemed at odds with the world around it. I settle into a five beat which seems comparatively stable after the 17s that preceded it, but I throw all that into chaos in my middle instrumental which was my way of paying tribute to Jimmy Page's instrumental chaos in parts of the live version of 'Dazed and Confused'. This track was wild and disparate until it became held together by the magnificent Bobby who's drum track took this to another level.

lyrics

Yellows and Reds, the evening comes in shadow
Sitting in bed, I wait, I know that she's coming
Thoughts through my head are pulled from toys on the shelving
Now awakened - the mark of all that follows

Christian Living - the baseline of my future
Hymnal signing - musicality in love
What is right?! What is wrong?! Where do these things come from?!
Time moves slow - if at all
Surrounded by all this love

I can feel it in my bones
I know there's something big for me
I have no hands but Yours
I am destined for the Deep

The act of church bores me
But, the unspoken words enthral
I kneel and offer
Constructed thoughts to the God above

I can feel it in my bones
I know there's something big for me
I have no hands but Yours
I am destined!

I can feel it in my bones
I know there's something big for me
All that I know for sure
Love will save us all
Will save us all
