With the birth of my daughter Jenna, I began working on a number of songs related to her, which expanded a couple of years later to include her sister, Natalie. I originally had this massive concept album dreamed up for both of them, but the idea died away as I tried to limit my songwriting an effort to catch up with recording.
My experience with the ska-punk band The Royal Rumble scarred (ska-ed?) me (in a good way) for life, and now I can't help my ska-ify so many songs when I play them. This song was one of my attempts to convert that ska-ness into one of my own songs, a short, punchy number that was meant to be a frenetic song to match the lyrics of the rapidly growing and changing daughters that I the fortune to have. I also really wanted to get a horn section, but good sick of trying to find musos (I didn't look very hard) and instead used a kazoo... which I think works pretty well.
lyrics
You learned to say another word today
If it carries on this way, we’ll know what you’re trying to say
But, it’s not bad, from before you learned to stand,
And now dancing to the band, we know how much fun you have!
The surprise you know more than just a little
So much fun being caught up in the middle
You got a smile that will always be in style
When you wear it on your dial, your ma and I do smile
How could I see just how much fun this would be?
When I have you on my knee, I’m as happy as could be!
An age since we got you back from hospital
So much fun being caught up in the middle
You’ll rise up as the answer to the riddle
So much fun being caught up in the middle
