Longest Word

about

In '92-'93, I wrote a note in my songbook which said something like 'more-than-words picking style song' which I, in early 1995, somehow extrapolated into the chords for this song. The first version of the lyrics proved to be long and somewhat messy in the song, with the exception of the chorus which fitted nicely. In late '95, however, I woke around 3am and, in the complete dark, scribbled these words down on paper. Thankfully, the next day I could see them and this song was complete.

Shane sang this version in the studio replacing the earlier version I had sung on "The Art" album. He did so while looking at a series of pictures of the recently departed Lady Diana as a form of inspiration.

The 2015 redo of this track took the original and cut about a minute out of it and then added the acoustic guitar solo that had always been envisaged for it.

lyrics

I miss what never was
How to come to terms with the loss
But when I felt, I wasn’t alone
Though my dreams never came home

She blows all my mind away
When she smiles I hear me say
Only she can smile that way
I hope that smile’s for me

It was the sweetest feel but so black
When I pushed it for a word, it just pushed me back
I’m pleased to see us grow
I just thought I should let you know

Washed, now I can resume to be
The constant person you would have me to be
Still I am webbed up like a Fly again
Double one – count it up from ten
