Morning

about

In 1998, I was on a huge Egypt kick. I loved everything ancient Egypt and studied it so much that I started to write a musical based on the Egyptian point of view of the biblical Exodus. As I started to piece together the story, this song somehow grew out of it. I have no idea how I wrote it really, except that I remember the twin-kick part in the pre-chorus I put in especially for Bob! This track became a live favourite of Shift in 2002 and this recording from Shift's last session captures the teeth of the song so well.

lyrics

Long, long ago
So the dead have told us so
A story came to be
Then was lost in history

The cities caked in gold
And the tomb of rulers old
The new king of the land
All the people at his hand

“All of you people from Goshen
To Abu Simbel and back again
Bow to Amun and to my hand!”

From the fathers hand
And around again
But it soon will end
We begin in the morning

All Egypt prays to him for fate
The king, he is god incarnate
Prosperity and peace belong to him

The obsession with death
Forever nearing a last breathe
To join Re in the skies
Is only the pharaoh’s prize

“Until I fade away,
I prepare for my last day.
For if my spirit comes again,
Entomb my body - I may need it yet.

“To keep me company when I die
Bury me with all the gold that’s mine
For the gods will see me and smile…”

Many centuries old
The tradition holds
But begins its fold
(The decay of the morning)

In the torrid time
Amun-Re, he dies
A new prayer resides
Come alive in the morning
