about

This 2016 song was added because it was a good fit and the album needed a little more teeth. The track was written in 10 minutes one Saturday morning after I woke with the riff in my head. Grabbing my guitar and the laptop to record as much as I could, the whole work came together quickly. It starts brutally with a riff in Eb (purely because I liked the idea of stepping down to the D) and then gets it's funk on. After a couple of verse-chorus movements in changes pace quickly into a more contemplative feel before building again for the climactic ending.

Bob, as always, gave me a quality backing track, and then Neil was my first choice to play the bass on this, given that the I thought he'd love to do the funky verses. The surprise for me was, however, the inclusion of a blistering guitar solo from my friend Kristian, whom I had played in the Royal Rumble with. I wanted to work with him on my 2015 album Collabor8, but it didn't fit. When I was working on this album a few months ago, I contacted him and it worked this time around. He sent it back to me quickly saying 'it's a bit rough - I can redo it if you need'. Have a listen. It's a million dollars! Thank you Kristian for playing a solo that fits the song perfectly and that I'll never be able to match! You're a star.

During my year in Opunake in 2016, I accidentally penned a handful of songs, this the final one of them. I went to a party at the end of the year, leaving my family at home to do so and found the event thoroughly not my cup of tea. After several hours at trying to make the event fit, I realised that everything I really needed (the family!) was home waiting. The next morning, a bit of frustration at the poor fit of the event perhaps played a bit too much or a part lyrically! I really loved my time in Opunake and this song is not a particularly fair reflection of that... although it freakin rocks.

One final note: the bridge piece is written to my wife. I would not have been able to do that year, or any of my life since we met, without her.

lyrics

I’m done! I’m over it!
This new frustration!
If you think you could get me to walk by
Without noticing the scene
I’m now intolerant in a new location
That’s five hours of my life I wish that I was walking in a dream

Call time on this Overland
If you think you could get me to walk by?
It shows how little you know me!

My son is an older man with a cool new station
I can’t sit back and watch while all I care about is torn away from me!
The cream doesn’t bother me until it draws a nation
To think that I had wondered what the taste of failing hearts could ever mean?

Collapsing the Overland
If I think I could get me to walk by?
It shows how little I know me!

It’s better to stream again
To know you’re here – isn’t it the best?!
To watch as time, it makes us older
Home is where the wife is
I know this! I can’t wait to cast it!
Thank you for partnering this Overland…
