about

The "Y3K: The Beginning" album is a conceptual piece about my 'spiritual reset', a prequel of parts one (2014) and two (2016) that tells of the beginning of my faith journey. As well as an incredible family that gave me the stable platform to grow out from, I was and still am blessed to possess a cadre of incredible friends. While I found primary school a bit of a struggle, I was able to fully emerge into myself in my secondary school years, partly through the love and acceptance of my friends. I was blessed by two groups of amazing people: my basketball-music friends, who have been at the core of my life since the late 80s, and my Christian friends, who have always been there when I needed them most.

The first verse tells this tale but then hints at how my Mother gave me the choice at the age of 14 to either come to church with her or stay in bed. I stayed in bed on Sunday mornings until I turned 21! The second verse of this track, however, focuses on one instance in particular where I was invited to watch a group of Christian basketball players from the US of A play the Hāwera Hornets (our local team). I was confronted by one of them about my faith (or lack of at the time) and had no idea how to even begin to think about it!

The main thrust of this 7-beat track comes from my good friend and trusted mentor in those days, Dave Mann. Not only is he an incredible spiritual mind and heart, but he's also ridiculously talented musically. This riff came from him playing around with Fruity Loops back in the day, and I lifted it to make the centrepiece of this track.

lyrics

Let me tell you a story…

I am blessed to possess the best friends on the earth
I should really tell them all just what they are worth
Living the Three Elements, a life full of mirth
Dented at the first school - my dear friends were few
Dragged into the second, reinvented anew
Now I feel alive and now I know what to do
My Friday's and my weekends have gone to my head
And all my Sunday morning's are spent tucked up in bed!

"You're holding onto nothing and I swear that you love it
You're holding onto nothing and I swear that you love it
Direction that you're heading gets as hot as an oven
Just take a hold of something and embrace all the lovin'”

Invited to the Hornets, to a basketball game
With my faith-filled friends, the ones that know me by name
This is way before Vision, what the Prez became
Talking to an Allstar, and he asks of my faith
The question kinda threw me, but not so my mate
He launches into story, my shock wasn't fake
Then they turn upon me and I'm forced to decide
If I can just decipher what is clouding my mind!
