The Setting Sun

about

2001 was the best year of my life. I met my wife Jo, got to tour with the Royal Rumble up and down the country, and it was the first year that I felt fully established in the Wellington region, having struggled the year before. This song, written at the end of that year, is a look back over that year.

Having said all that, it does make it a bit weird to hear someone else (Aaron) sing about all these things personal to me - but, it must be said, what was a song that I could never get to work quite right, became an awesome track, thanks to the collaborative powers of the STRGPXI. Aaron gave it the joyful tones it needed, and Pete and the rest of the guys, took a hold of it and restructured it perfectly. Roll on 2002! Er...

lyrics

As this year meets the setting sun
Over my shoulder I peer at this one
Another chapter in a story bright
I’d like to think I got this one right

Was it the search for a soulful mate?
Was it a Rumble that made it great?
I’ve done it before – I’ll do it again
Once more ‘round the sun again!

I like to think that I got it right
I grew an inch more in my lean to the light
I found a wife and found a new best friend
A simple change that has no end

I had a blast in a touring band
I got to shake big Buster by the hand
Thanks to the Rumble and my new found friends
Perhaps we should go ‘round the sun again?

This one was best only one month in!
There is no doubt now I’m near the end
How should I go about beating that?
Getting hitched might put me on the right track!

So as I head towards the rising sun
I peer ahead at the next one
I said it once – I’ll say it again
Maybe once more ‘round the sun again!
