Winston the Weta

from Closure by Cynosure

about

This Shane-masterpiece track shifted and changed as the band wrestled with it while in the Avalanche Audio studio. It began as a floating 6-beat, but was violently changed when Bob tore into it in the studio, making it a straight 4 that made it urgent and powerful. Mark then wrote the keyboard part by laying down a piece at a time, while Shane and the band listened. The end result was a powerhouse - maybe the most powerful track in the entire RockLords catalog. Once Shane added his awesome vocal, the track was done.

The lyrics are a imagined conversation with a weta named Winston, who mysteriously begins to expound the secrets of life and death. Incidentally, Shane's flat had a pet weta they would feed flies too by the name of Winston, possibly named after Winston Peters.

lyrics

It’s such a scream, if you wish to try
Just lift the lid and I’ll show you
Mortality always has its price; stuck with the body they gave you
To deal alone with such tempered things, no privacy for the cast out
So deep indeed in this hole again, down on my luck
Bastards way out

Higher and higher I’ll climb, from something so deep and sublime
And everyday I awake, see clearer now through my mistakes

Are wishes for free, are wishes for me
‘Cause I want to wish again
See flies on the wall, can’t fly here at all
Why not, I’m not wingless
If someone should care, is someone aware
In darkness, I’m drifting
So pray for the night, that makes it alright, It’s alright
Alright for the moment

Waiting, oh waiting, for this all to end
The sun has been stolen and I can’t pretend
To walk in a sunshine that I’ll never know
To each here’s a raincloud with teardrops of gold
Come on show me who’s closest

I wish I could feel without showing
I wish I could learn without knowing
I wish there was somewhere through time without growing old
I wish I could give without losing
I wish I could love without hurting
I wish there was room in my mind for someone to call their home

So cold now, I feel frozen
In sunshine, I felt golden
In times by, I could fly high
One step away from your blue sky

And higher and higher I’ll fly
Pushed onwards since I was a child
And every reason I break
It’s over and now it’s too late
Why such an ordeal, this habit seems real
I lived and I learned and I tried
To live every day without a mistake
It’s over I failed and I died

Now this something is escaping you
We picked the winner who done it
You chose the one from the sugar cane
So sweet to taste in a moment
Now hear my voice, hear me scream out loud
Shame on all those who are closest
All tucked away in this lousy hell
When will we take time to notice?
